시험비행을 시작한 미해병대, 미해군용 UAV 시스템 MQ-8
함정용 UAV로 주목받고 있는 MQ-8B 시스템 입니다. UH-60의 운영 공간이 3대의 시스템 운영이 가능하며 현재 자동 이착륙 등에 대한 실험이 마무리 되어 약 10여개 국 정도 에서 도입을 추진 중이라고 합니다.
약 600 파운드 정도의 외부 무장 장착이 가능하다고 알려져 있어 대 수상 및 대잠 공격에 대한 방안들이 시도 되고 있다고 알려 있습니다. 무엇보다 안정적인 자동 이착륙 시스템이 자랑이라고 알려져 있습니다
미해군의 MQ-8B, Fire Scout(1) 무인기는 Maryland주 St. Inigoes, Patuxent River Naval Air Station에 있는 Webster Field Annex에서 지난달 처음으로 처녀비행을 하였다. 이 해군의 수직이착륙무인기는 MQ-8A로 시작하였으나 2005년 여름, MQ-8B로 다시 디자인되고 다기능의 무인기로 진화하였다.
비행시험동안 3가지 시험을 계획하고 그대로 수행되었다. 1번 시험은 조종사가 발사명령 직후 바로 발사취소하는 시험이다. 이 시험은 아직 발사가 안 되었으면 제어로직이 발사대에 있는 비행체를 그대로 두는 것이다.
2번 시험은 이륙직후 발사취소시험이다. 이것은 조종사가 이륙 후 즉시 발사취소를 수행한다.
3번 시험은 주로 안전에 관한 것이다. Fire Scout 개발자들은 취소명령시 비행체가 고도 10 feet 이내면 발사대에 다시 착륙하고 10 feet 이상이면 30 feet에서 호버링하다가 다음 명령을 기다린다. 이 시험은 비행체가 10 feet 이상이면 발사 취소 명령이 있어도 무시하고 호버링 위치로 가는 것이다. 이 비행체는 12분간 telemetry 자료를 기록하면서 호버링한다. 착륙명령으로, 비행체는 발사대로 다시 되돌아 온다.
“우리는 프로그램의 중요한 이정표를 이끌어 낸 우리의 노력을 자랑스럽게 생각한다.” 라고 수직이착륙무인기 팀장인 Rob Murphy가 말했다. “이것은 매우 공격적 스케줄이다. 우리는 모든 힘을 모아 제시간에 해낼 것이다.”
Fire scout의 가장 주목할 만한 개선은 증가된 추력과 페이로드 기능이다. 여기에 더하여, MQ-8B는 작전 반경을 2배 이상으로 하였고 전의 것보다 체공시간을 더 증가하였다. 이 Fire Scout은 모든 선박의 해양 환경에서 안전, 신뢰, 재사용, 자동비행 기능을 수행한다. 비행동안, Fire Scout은 인식, 감시, 감독, 전방의 적 확인 등이 가능하다. 이 프로그램은 2008년에 함대 비행을 계획하고 있고 이것이 성공하면 2009년에 배치 예정이다.
Fire Scout 무인기는 Northrop Grumman 무인기시스템에서 제작하였고 미 해군 무인시스템, PMA263에서 관장한다.

Program Overview:
Northrop Grumman's Transformational Fire Scout Vertical Takeoff and Landing Tactical Unmanned Aerial Vehicle system provides unprecedented situation awareness and precision targeting support for U.S. Armed Forces of the future.
The MQ-8B Fire Scout has the ability to autonomously take off and land on any aviation-capable warship and at prepared and unprepared landing zones in proximity to the soldier in contact.

Legacy of High Reliability:
Based on a Schweizer Aircraft commercial airframe with over 20 million flight hours, the Fire Scout vehicle incorporates reliable turbine power (160 million flight hours) using standard NATO heavy fuel. Leveraging from this FAA certified aircraft with commonality of over 50 percent of the mechanical parts, the servicing and logistical processes are well known, proven and documented. This "low risk" approach for the airframe allows effective maturation of the entire system within a short development schedule.
